Community Class is this Wednesday! This week, Coli Community Class is this Wednesday! This week, Colin Stetter will be talking about:  “Understanding Group Think and Selfhood with the Help of Hoffer and Orwell.”

The past 100 years have seen the rise of a variety of mass movements, promoting just as varied motives and goals. This class will explore Eric Hoffer’s The True Believer in an effort to understand what mass movements appeal to in the individual and what sort of person is especially attracted to mass movements. We will compare Hoffer’s ideas, a “bottom-up” approach, to Orwell’s “top-down” observations regarding the tools modern political structures employ to achieve mass obedience.

Details: May 18th, 6:30 pm @ Gutenberg College
NOTE: This class may be attended in person at Gutenberg College or online via Zoom. There is a small charge for remote attendance. Registration is required to attend via Zoom.

If you're like most people looking for colleges ri If you're like most people looking for colleges right now, your thoughts about college are probably in a bit of a jumble. Perhaps you've thought about what you'd like to major in, what kind of campus you'd like to live on, or how much you can afford to pay.

You might be asking yourself, "What college should I go to?" Before answering that question, though, you might consider a more fundamental one: "What kind of college should I go to?" The factors that most people assume to be important when choosing a college—reputation, location, tuition, etc.—may not have much to do with who you really are and what you are really looking for in a college education.

So, we've designed the College Discovery to help you discover what factors do matter to you. Find it here: https://www.tryinteract.com/share/quiz/5fa9e744598e4b0014fe9057

Our next Community Class is on Wednesday! This wee Our next Community Class is on Wednesday! This week, Chris Swanson will be talking about “Solutions and Illusions,” to continue the series, “It’s Complicated: The Histories Behind What We Think We Know.”

When a populous and complex society has a problem, it always seems to need a big solution. But who is going to provide this big solution?  Is it private enterprise, such as Adam Smith’s “invisible hand”?  Do we need the government, and its authority to intervene? Or perhaps an independent, non-profit organization with humanitarian goals? Overall, this situation is indeed complicated!
This class will examine the value and inherent limitations of the aforementioned options. While recognizing that our desires and hopes for solutions are good, Chris will make the case that the hope for a solution is ultimately an illusion but that hope in God will not be disappointed.

Details: May 4th, 6:30 pm @ Gutenberg College

Registration is now open for Summer Institute 2022 Registration is now open for Summer Institute 2022: Stories of Conversion!

Since its beginning, a prominent aspect of Christianity has been the conversion narrative. Sometimes dramatic, sometimes mundane, these accounts tell the stories of how particular individuals committed their lives to Christ. For the 2022 Summer Institute, we will read several of these accounts from throughout history, and we will think about how these stories of particular people living in contexts that differ from our own might nevertheless impact our thinking now. What should we do with the inescapably personal aspects of these stories—can they still speak to someone who is considering Christianity? How can these stories provide encouragement to those who have been Christians for a while already? Is having a conversion experience necessary for being a Christian?

Join us July 28-30 for discussions, talks, and food, as we contemplate together these stories of conversion. Speakers include Chris Alderman, Charlie Dewberry, Brian Julian, and Nancy Scott, and discussions will be focused on readings from Augustine, Jonathan Edwards, C.S. Lewis, and the New Testament.

Details:
When: July 28-30
Cost (Before July 1): $85 (Individual); $115 (Family); $40 (Student)
